Affirmations are short, positive statements that are repeated to oneself, to instill or reinforce an intention or belief; that one wants to manifest into reality.
They work by altering thought-processes or beliefs that are deeply rooted in the subconscious mind. Regular, repeated enforcement of new thoughts can replace the old (and usually limiting) ones. When you observe your thoughts, you’ll notice your perception is nothing but the outcome of your mind. It is possible to train and befriend your mind to take the positive path always, whenever you stand at a cross-road.
A lot of us have commemorated our journeys with affirmations with high hopes, practiced our favourite affirmations diligently and waited for results to show. But alas, we never saw sunshine! While affirmations are quite helpful, yours might not have worked for you. Which is why, we got in touch with Poonam Arora, Founder of White Light Elements to know a few possible reasons why affirmations don’t work for some of us and here’s what they had to say.
1. Were you clear about your goal?
We often have multiple goals we aspire to achieve. A few may be short-term goals and a few long-term. Thus, prioritising is extremely important! Focus on one goal at a time and work on it vigorously. We often see people switching affirmations to achieve multiple goals at once, which doesn’t work out in their favour.
2. Did you form your affirmations wisely?
When forming affirmations, ensure that the affirmations are in the present tense (practice them like you’re living it) and pay close attention to the sequence of words and sentence formation. Affirmations are supposed to be positive by nature. Thus, avoid using negative words like not, am not, never, don’t or wont. Avoid forming sentences that arise out of lack of something or are defensive in nature or have a negative connotation. An example of this would be—instead of ‘I am not chaotic’, affirm ‘I am organised’.
3. Were your affirmations relatable and did you foster any doubts?
A lot of times, our aspirations are high and that makes our affirmation too good to be true. Try making them relatable, realistic, aligning with your current mind-pattern and practical for them to work. If they don’t align with who you are, it may create a conflict in thoughts, leading to no or negative outcomes. Even a drop of doubt can dilute the effectiveness of affirmations. While practicing, it is important to have complete faith and belief in your them. Try clubbing them with sincere efforts for the best results!
4. Were you consistent?
It takes a minimum of 21 days for something new to become a habit and a part of your routine. Practice your affirmations consistently until they seamlessly become a routine for you and notice the manifestation that follows!
5. Were you mindful while affirming?
It’s not about how many times you scribbled them down. It is about how mindfully you chose to practice. Even if you practice them 10 times but with complete faith, it shall yield better results than practicing 100 times but with lesser faith. Visualise, emotionalise and energise your goal with affirmations!
